To my fellow Canadians, currently there’s a tariff on stuff from Firewalla. For my order, the AP7 Desktop, there are additional charges of about $380 CAD
I’m trying to save you some stickers shock.
Assume a similar experience for the upcoming Switch.
Thank you, I will forward to our shipping people. Duties is the extra tariff on stuff shipped from USA or made from Malaysia or china? I assume the Tax part is your local tax?
Honestly, I’m searching for an explanation myself. Because DHL decides the charges in a black box and hands a bill to Canada Post with no detailed explanation. The latter has no idea about how the former calculated the charge, but requires payment. I was always curious why Firewalla uses such an obscure shipper within North America when there are so many other shippers, but that’s another conversation.
Currently there Government of Canada has 25% counter tariffs on US electronics imported into Canada. I think they care little about the country of manufacturing and treat it as “electronics from the USA” and I suspect they calculated my tariff rate closer to a 50% instead of 25%. This is a combination of events resulting in additional charges. Simply put, bad timing on top of bad timing.
The real shame is the delay in getting this product certified and sold for the Canadian market, but again, that’s another conversation. For some, the resulting delay has priced the product from luxurious and decadent indulgence to unreasonable shakedown, at least until the retaliatory tariffs are removed.
Hi, I’m sorry to hear about this experience! I completely understand how upsetting it is to get hit with unexpected tariff fees and I appreciate you bringing it to our attention.
I’ve investigated the issue. What most likely happened, is that the item had an admin error in the system, causing the product to be declared as “Made in USA” when in reality it should be “Made in Malaysia”. That is possibly what triggered the US tariff charges. (This applies to AP7 Ceiling only)
Interestingly despite this, we haven’t seen any cases of other customers running into this issue. The product box itself is clearly labeled “Made in Malaysia,” so it’s possible this slipped through as a rare one-off oversight that DHL didn’t catch either.
Regardless, we have updated the product listing data and notified our fulfillment warehouse so all future orders should not hit this issue.
By the way, have you tried contacting DHL’s customs brokerage team about this? If you try providing photos of the box showing the physical “Made in Malaysia” marking, perhaps they can issue an amendment/correction to local customs authorities, and potentially refund the additional tariffs paid?
when you say, you haven’t seen this case, are you referring to orders placed by Canadian customers on or after September 8, 2026, the date when counter tariffs were enacted? Like I said earlier, my Orange order placed in July 2026 had no issues because counter tariffs were not enacted.
I believe the relevant question is, does your fulfilment warehouse have an ability to declare the country of origin of the product being shipped? Did the Admin error you refereeing originated within your warehouse or any other area of your responsibility?
There is no way one would expect DHL to notice the “made in” sign of a box within a box, wouldn’t you agree? Seriously, the Firewalla box is packed inside another box. I don’t want to be rude, but come on! Which begs the question, why use a German national courier in the USA, which uses Canada Post as a blind intermediary to deliver the package outside the USA. It’s a bit of a head-scratcher!!! You’re using Shopify back-end, a Canadian company, for heavens’ sake, yet sales, certification, and shipping to Canada is difficult to imagine, like a coal-powered toothbrush.
Love the products, hate the BS
I want to hear from other Canadians who have placed orders after September 8, 2026. Were you charged exorbitant Duties and Taxes?
When international shipments go out, country of origin information is pulled automatically from a mix of product data, warehouse fulfillment systems, and carrier customs filings. Customs brokers then process those electronic manifests alongside incoming packages during clearance. The AP7 Ceiling was one of the systems that was briefly “empty”. Products like AP7 Desktop and Gold Plus have two origins, so it requires a manual check. Everything else has a singular origin of either Taiwan or China.
Since these US/Canada tariffs are so new, for us to take a look and get this sorted out, we need a bit more details about the order. If you can contact our support directly at help@firewalla.com, we can look up your specific order, and check what happened.
